Balance Disorder Symptoms

Dizziness is a common complaint in the doctor's office, especially from elderly patients. While dizziness may be a symptom of balance disorder, there can be other causes that are not related to the vestibular system. Dehydration, arteriosclerosis, low blood pressure, and disorders of the nervous system such as multiple sclerosis are a few non-vestibular conditions that can cause dizziness.

It's very important to tell your doctor your specific symptoms, whether you've recently fallen, and if you've suffered recent trauma to the head. Your information combined with the proper testing can help your doctor determine the specific balance disorder and begin treatment. Your doctor may refer you to a Neurologist, a physician who specializes in diseases of the brain or an otolaryngologist, a physician who specializes in diseases of the ear, nose and throat (ENT).
