Balance Disorder Treatments

Treatment options vary for balance disorders depending on the specific cause. For instance, antibiotics can be administered to cure an inner ear infection. For patients with BPPV, a canalith repositioning maneuver may be indicated. Changes in diet, especially reducing sodium intake, can help patients with Meniere's disease. In some cases surgery may be indicated.

Vestibular rehabilitation (balance retraining) is another option. Health professionals specifically trained in treatment of balance disorders tailor an exercise regimen specific to the patient to help them compensate for loss of balance. The exercises incorporate movements of the head and eyes as well as balance activities to teach the brain to compensate for vestibular dysfunction. The vestibular system, eyes, and muscles of the body work together to send the brain signals to regulate balance.

The goal of vestibular rehabilitation is to increase independence by reducing or eliminating the symptoms of vertigo, dizziness and nausea, as well as fall prevention. The patient may be referred to an occupational therapist to learn how to make their home a safer environment.
